CRINIS

CRINIS is a research project designed to evaluate transparency and accountability in political party financing and will culminate with a set of recommendations to improve transparency and accountability in political party financing.

CRINIS is a research project designed to evaluate transparency and accountability procedures in political party financing. The programme will culminate with a set of recommendations that would improve transparency and accountability in political party financing.

The project is based on the acclaimed CRINIS project, jointly undertaken in Latin America, by Transparency International and The Carter Center. Transparency Maldives aims to replicate this project, with context-specific modifications. Other Asian affiliates of TI have already implemented this project successfully in their respective countries.

The project involves information sharing with other TI chapters to learn from their experiences, adapting the methodologies of the original CRINIS project to fit the Maldivian context and evaluating the levels of transparency enabled by existing legislation and practices vis-à-vis political party financing. Transparency Maldives will work closely with political parties, the Elections Commission, corporate donors, other relevant stakeholders and the general public to ensure the successful implementation of this project.

Transparency Maldives recognises the importance and need for political parties to secure financing in order to effectively operate and conduct electoral campaigns. This process is a necessary and integral part of a functioning democracy, provided that these funding sources are subject to public oversight. This programme aims to increase public trust in political parties - one of the cornerstones of the Maldives’ young democracy. TM hopes that the recommendations from this project will address issues such as the overwhelming public perception on how money exerts undue and illicit influence on politics and the outcome of elections.
